New Riccarton Community Centre put back

Riccarton Community CentreThe opening date for a new Riccarton Community Centre has been put back, and is now not likely until Christmas 2019.

The Clarence Street community centre was originally home to the Riccarton Borough Council chambers before the borough was absorbed into the greater Christchurch city in 1989. But it was closed following the 2011 earthquake, although full City Council walk-in payment and enquiry services (e.g. rates, dog registration) are still provided at the site.

St James' Anglican Church on Riccarton Road, which has been closed for six years because of earthquake damage, are now looking for a new property in Central Riccarton to provide outreach for the community.

The weather was good and the crowd even better. Several thousand people from the surrounding community and beyond poured into Harrington Park from all points on Saturday, October 14, for the “Our Riccarton, Our Community” fun day.

Popular Uni-Cycle route officially opens

A cycleway linking the University of Canterbury to the central city was officially opened this morning as figures show more than 1000 people a day are already cycling on it.

The 5.6 kilometre Uni-Cycle route is the third Major Cycle Route  in Christchurch to fully open.
