City Council candidates - 1 vacancy

Luke ChandlerLuke Chandler
Independent - Best for Riccarton

My principal place of residence is not in the Riccarton Ward area. I am also standing for the Riccarton Ward of the Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton Community Board.

I am seeking your support because I believe our community needs solutions, independence and action from a new generation of public representation. As your Council Candidate, I will stand up and suggest solutions, not promises. I will unify our community and ensure our strategic assets are being retained. Let's push pause on planting trees down Riccarton Road. Let's work on curbing rapidly rising rates. Let's take party politics out of our city and keep control in the hands of Christchurch residents. Let's work with Central Government and Regional Council to more reliable, frequent, accessible and disability- friendly public transport. Let's fight to keep pristine water rights for the next generation and against unnecessary chlorination. If I can assist on an issue affecting you, your family or a local group please contact me directly.

Where do we want Christchurch to be in 10 years? It's now time for a new face and a new perspective on our City Council. Born in Christchurch, raised in Riccarton and having served on our Community Board, I have a deep understanding of our community. Being fluent in Korean and English, and with a study background in Chinese, Japanese and Te Reo Māori, I have a broad understanding of our diverse community and believe I can unite our communities closer together in harmony. I'm an Authorised Financial Adviser, an Executive Member of Keep Christchurch Beautiful and passionate about keeping our Garden City clean and green. We need to take action on reviewing Council spending, we need to take action on ensuring rates are affordable and we need to take action on restoring basic infrastructure and services to our city.

The west side of Christchurch has been home for 45yrs, attending primary and secondary schools, aware of local issues and needs in the Riccarton Ward. I strongly support expenditure accountability, zero rate increases plus CPI, rescind 10% rate increases, appoint an independent razor gang to cut council expenditure. Council must refocus on basic community infrastructure, roading, footpaths, rubbish, sewer disposal, water, parks, reserves, sustainable environmental issues, building, infrastructure, planning. I will advocate, new business incentives including rates breaks to attract new business. With an appropriate business plan the Stadium must be completed urgently. I have an extensive background in Business and Community organisations; Rose Historic Chapple, Cerebral Palsy Society, Templeton Welfare Council, Kilmarnock Enterprise, school boards, sports clubs, tourism, hospitality, building, development, management. As your Councillor I will be an effective communicator for the silent majority of ratepayers.

After 48 years of living and raising a family in Christchurch and many years of community service including 15 years as the Police Commander responsible for the Riccarton Ward, and 15 years on the Community Board, I believe I am well qualified to represent you on the CCC. The Riccarton Ward requires someone who understands both local and central government work. I believe in accountability in all areas of public service and will work hard to develop a sustainable community that creates a healthy environment that manages the issues related to the city rebuild, transport and urban development. I will bring to the Council an open, independent and practical approach to decision making which includes talking with and listening to people in my community. We must stop spending and wasting money. Together we can grow Riccarton and our city, positively and effectively.

Riccarton has been at the centre of so much of my adult life. My first job was in Riccarton, I went to the University of Canterbury, and for many years I was the Pastor at Riccarton Baptist Church - which is in the heart of Riccarton. Whether I was studying, working in the union movement to give workers a voice, or serving as Pastor, I've always been driven by my values: values that I think are Riccarton values. They're about empowerment, fairness, inclusion and opportunity. If elected, I'll bring those values to the Council table. That's a council that gets back to basics; delivering on the fundamentals, not the nice-to-haves. I'll say no to plans to sell off assets, whether that's dividend-returning companies or social infrastructure like our libraries. These short-term plans leave us all paying more in rates over time. I'll also fight to make our water clean again.

I've lived in Riccarton almost all my life and I'm the third generation of my family to live here. My home now is two streets from where I grew up. I'm a Management Consultant specialising in community organisations. This helps me understand how to make things work. I've founded, led, governed and advised many groups in paid and voluntary roles. This includes youth work, education, churches, budget advice, rehabilitation, and mental health. Most recently I served on the Riccarton High School Board of Trustees as Board Chair. I'm married with three adult children and am of Maori descent. Riccarton has been a great place for my family, and I want it to be that for you too. I'm practical, independent and believe local government is about making life better for local people. Three things that Riccarton needs right now are better parking, better public transport and better budgeting by council.

I'm a trained primary school teacher, living here in Riccarton with my wife and four daughters. I am also the Imam at Al-Noor Mosque on Deans Ave. March 15th was a terrible day. But afterwards, our entire community rallied around us. I saw love and compassion from all of our city - this gave me such hope for our future. I'm running for community board to give back to my local community, and to build bridges between the different groups in Riccarton and in wider Christchurch. A vibrant and successful neighbourhood is one where people feel safe and connected and where our local businesses can flourish. They are places where we care for each other and for our environment and where we protect our clean fresh drinking water.
